Determining Storage Requirements for QW Applications

We are often asked by IT Departments for estimates on how much storage (disk) space QW Applications require so we created this outline for calculating an estimate.

For the purpose of this estimate here are the givens:

Note: Individual fields can be defined with differing lengths – for this example we made them the same.

QW applications have what we call supporting fields of values for items like Date, Time, Shift, Product, Team and Comments and we say there are typically 10 of these per application with an average field size of 30 characters.

In addtion there will be the fields you collect numeric data for like Pressures, Speeds and Temperatures as well as Calculated variables with a length of 18 bytes each

    • A: Support Fields 10 times length 30 = 300 bytes

    B: Numeric/Calculated fields 100 times length of 18 = 1800 bytes

So the record length for this example application would be A + B = 2100 bytes per record

Next you would factor in the frequency that data would be collected – for this example we will sample data once an hour and 24 hours a day

    • Per Day 24 * 2100 =  50,400 bytes or 49,22KB or .05MB

    • Per Month 30 days * .05MB = 1.5MB

               Per Year 1.5MB * 12 months = 18MB

You can add a 10% factor (18MB + 10% = 19.8MB) for all the other files associated with a single QW Application.  Multiply this value (19.8MB) times the number of QW Applications you have or expect to have and you have your storage requirements.

For Downtime or Defects you may experience a higher sampling frequency than once per hour.  Typically you would not collect 100 fields of data in these types of applications so it may balance out the estimate.  To make your estimate more accurate you may want to adjust the frequency in the above calculations.

One last thought on managing file sizes is to use the Archiving feature (Move) in the QWUtility program on a regular basis to keep file sizes in check.

System Requirements

Minimum system requirements for a Workstation:

  • Windows Version: 10, 8 and 7
  • Memory: 2GB Ram
  • Disk Space : 1GB
  • Screen Resolution: 1024 x 768

Minimum system requirements for a File Server:

  • Disk Space: 1GB **
